Databases
There are many freely available online research
tools, produced by NASA and other government/non-profit
organizations as well as commercial organizations.
Here are links to some valuable research
tools frequently used by Goddard Librarians:
NASA databases:
NASA Astrophysical Data System
(ADS)
http://adswww.harvard.edu/index.html
The Astrophysics Data System (ADS)
is a NASA-funded project which maintains
four bibliographic databases containing
more than 4.3 million records: Astronomy
and Astrophysics, Instrumentation, Physics
and Geophysics, and preprints in Astronomy.
Goddard Projects Directory
http://library.gsfc.nasa.gov/search/projects/
Reference resource of current and historical Goddard projects, missions, and
instruments.
NASA Technical Reports Server
(NTRS)
http://ntrs.nasa.gov/
The NTRS collects scientific and
technical information from NASA's technical
report servers and non-NASA sites. The
full text of selected NASA documents
are freely available. Many NASA documents
may be ordered from
the NASA Center for Aerospace Information
(CASI).
Databases from other government/nonprofit
organizations:
Arxiv.org preprint archive
http://arxiv.org/
Started in Aug 1991, arXiv.org (formerly
xxx.lanl.gov) is a fully automated electronic
archive and distribution server for research
papers. Covered areas include physics
and related disciplines, mathematics,
nonlinear sciences, computer science
and quantitative biology.
CiteSeer
http://citeseer.ist.psu.edu/
CiteSeer is a scientific literature
digital library and search engine that
focuses primarily on the literature in
computer and information science. Hosted
by Penn State 's School of Information
Sciences and Technology.
National Technical Information
Service (NTIS)
http://www.ntis.gov/

reports. Database searchable 1990 to present.
Most documents indexed by the database may
be ordered for a fee.
STINET
http://stinet.dtic.mil/

or a purchase, or finding a local library
with a subscription to the publication.
Ingenta
http://www.ingentaconnect.com/
IngentaConnect offers one of the most
comprehensive collections of academic and
professional research articles online - some
17 million articles from 28,000 publications,
including 6,100 online. Ingenta provides
a fee-based document delivery service to
members of the public.
