The Goddard Library, as a partner in resource sharing among libraries, borrows and lends materials supplementing its on-site collection with resources available from other libraries. In addition, the Library utilizes commercial document delivery services to obtain needed materials for GSFC patrons.
Eligibility
A GSFC Library Card is required to request materials through InterLibrary Loan and Document Delivery. NASA Civil Service employees, contractors, research associates, temporary staff, retirees, and personnel defined as "other" authorized to work at GSFC are eligible for a Library Card and thus, ILL/DD Services.Materials Offered
Books, theses, dissertations, conference proceedings and some materials reproduced in microform format can be borrowed from other libraries. Photocopies of journal articles or other non-circulating materials can be requested from other libraries in accordance with copyright guidelines.Materials Not Offered
The following types of materials are usually not loaned by or available from other libraries or from commercial document suppliers:
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) regulates the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials. The law specified that a copy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research". A user may be liable for copyright infringement if he/she makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use". The GSFC Library reserves the right to return an ILL order if, in its judgment, fulfillment would involve violation of copyright law.
The Goddard Library's InterLibrary Loan Borrowing system, ILLiad, may be used to request articles or books via the Library's Web Site. Select Requests from the Quick Picks menu. Click on the Requests > Go link. After logging in, you may request a book, article, paper, conference, proceeding, standards document, or other material.
From the Requests page, you may also request a Literature Search, make a Material Suggestion, Renew Items Online, or ask a Question.
Goddard Library Request Form (GLRF)
Printed request forms, referred to as GLRFs, are also available to order materials.
GLRFs are available at the Informtion Desk and ILL Unit. A requestor has the
option to submit a GLRF in person, mail it to the Library or fax it to the
ILL/DD Unit or by dialing (301) 286-1755.
Please Note: Telephone requests are not allowed.
Library users may request as many items as needed at one time. However, the ILL unit will process only ten (10) requests per week per patron unless other arrangements have been made. This policy is to ensure that all patrons will be served. If multiple requests are needed, prioritization is highly recommended so that the requests will be processed in order of importance with urgent and rush requests first.
Upon arrival of materials, the ILL/Document Delivery staff will notify users by e-mail, phone, and/or GSFC internal mail. Items may be picked up at the ILL/Document Delivery Unit between 9:00 am and 6:00 pm. Copies of journal articles can be mailed to the user's office via GSFC internal mail if requested.
